An Amazing 4-Day, 3-Night Phu Quoc Holiday Review (2023)

5/5 - (1 vote)

Our group consisted of four adults and one 6-year-old child. This trip wasn’t planned in advance; it was a spontaneous decision. We booked our flight and hotel combo just four days before departure, which felt a bit rushed. However, the trip was fantastic! Phu Quoc is stunning ❤️❤️❤️, and the locals were incredibly friendly and helpful.

Booking Our Hotel

Our combo package included accommodation at the 3-star PRAHA Hotel (airport transfers and breakfast buffet included). However, during our stay, the buffet wasn’t available, so they served pho and bun for breakfast. The buffet resumed the day we left. We were more than happy with the 3-star standard; the rooms were clean and attractive, there were two swimming pools, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Getting Around Phu Quoc

Airport – Hotel Transfers: The hotel provided complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off service.

Upon arrival at Phu Quoc Airport, a driver was waiting to take us to the hotel. They also provided transport back to the airport on our departure day.

Getting to Attractions and Restaurants: We rented motorbikes from the hotel (150,000 VND per day per bike).

Where Did We Eat?

  • Ra Khơi Seafood Restaurant: The seafood here was undeniably fresh and delicious, but a bit pricey.
  • Cat Bien Conveyor Belt Hot Pot: Highly recommended.
  • Kien Xay Bun Quay: Unique and enjoyable, as you season your own broth to taste.
  • Oc Binh Dan 30k (Budget-Friendly Snails): Decent.
  • Tuoi Tham Family Restaurant: (On our last day, we stumbled upon this gem while looking for lunch. The food was unexpectedly amazing and incredibly affordable, and the kitchen was spotless. We wished we’d found it sooner!)
  • Com Tam Restaurant (We tried a few places, but the one near our hotel was the best.)

Day 1:

We arrived in Phu Quoc at 2 PM. The hotel’s shuttle was waiting to take us for check-in. After settling in and changing, we rented motorbikes and headed to a nearby Com Tam restaurant for lunch and fresh coconuts.

Around 3:30 PM, we set off for Sao Beach (25 km from Duong Dong town). Getting there was an adventure, relying on directions and Google Maps. We arrived after 4 PM, just as the sun was setting. The view of the sandy beach was mesmerising! (Perhaps because it had been a while since our last beach trip?)

Although the water wasn’t crystal clear during this season, the sand was pristine and white. We saw the iconic leaning coconut tree and took photos on the swing (20,000 VND per ride).

We loved watching the tiny fish swimming at the shoreline. My son was completely captivated and didn’t want to leave.

After 5 PM, we returned to the hotel to freshen up before heading back to town for dinner at Ra Khơi Seafood Restaurant. Afterwards, we explored the Phu Quoc Night Market.

The market offered a variety of interesting street food, including thốt nốt drink with basil seeds (which we couldn’t finish!), thốt nốt cakes to take home as souvenirs, and various flavours of choux pastry.

On our way back, we grabbed enormous fruit smoothies (30,000 VND each) and some snacks and milk for our tour the next day.

Day 2:

This was the highlight of our trip – a day filled with island hopping and picture-perfect moments.

We booked the 4 Island Tour + Hon Thom Cable Car + Sunset Sanato package through Thu Hoài (known for capturing stunning sunset photos). Everything was excellent. Despite hearing stories about seasickness from canoe rides, I thoroughly enjoyed it (I get carsick, so I was worried).

Minh Quân was our tour guide. Our group, along with two other women on the tour, were keen on taking photos and had done our research on picturesque spots. We were prepared to strike a pose!

Quân was a great photographer, but unfortunately, he was also booked for a private photoshoot with another tourist on the tour. We didn’t get as many photos as we’d hoped, but we were still grateful for his efforts and his dedication to capturing great shots even under the midday sun. ?

Island Hopping Itinerary

8:30 AM: Pick-up from hotel/resort. 9:00 AM: Visit a pearl farm and witness pearl extraction. We didn’t actually see much here ?. 9:30 AM: Board the canoe to begin exploring Phu Quoc’s most beautiful islands. 10:15 AM: Arrive at Mong Tay Island, often called Vietnam’s Robinson Crusoe Island. The water here was breathtakingly clear and turquoise – a photographer’s dream! 11:00 AM: Depart for Gam Ghi Island (or Bom Island) for snorkeling amidst stunning natural coral reefs. I skipped the snorkeling and fed bread crumbs to the schools of fish with my son. It was a beautiful sight. Snorkelers had their underwater photos taken. 11:45 AM: Arrive at May Rut Ngoai Island for lunch and photo opportunities. The water here displayed three distinct shades of colour, creating a stunning visual. 2:15 PM: Depart May Rut Ngoai for Hon Thom Island (freshwater showers and free changing facilities available here). We had 45 minutes to explore and take photos at Hon Thom before queuing for the cable car. Experience the world’s longest oversea cable car ride to An Thoi Station, enjoying breathtaking views of Phu Quoc’s sky and sea. 4:30 PM: Transfer from An Thoi Station to Sunset Sanato, home to the four long-legged elephants and the iconic Future Intelligence statue (human face sculpture), for check-in and a spectacular sunset view. We were running late, so we skipped An Thoi Station and headed straight to Sunset Sanato for photos. ?. 6:00 PM: Return to hotel. End of tour.

Although tired from the tour, we freshened up and headed back to town for conveyor belt hot pot at Cat Bien. It was quite late by the time we finished, so we skipped the night market and opted for giant smoothies (25,000 VND each) and some fruit and snacks to enjoy by the hotel pool.

Tips for the Island Tour:

  • Wear water-resistant sandals or flip-flops, as there will be lots of wading.
  • Bring two bikinis: one for Mong Tay Island and one for May Rut Ngoai Island.
  • Bring two maxi dresses: one for Hon Thom Island and one for Sunset Sanato (the brighter the colours, the better the photos ?).
  • Bring a towel from the hotel.
  • Apply plenty of sunscreen, especially if you’ll be taking lots of photos.

Day 3:

The island tour had taken its toll, and no one was up for an early start. Despite our plans for a morning swim at the hotel, we didn’t get moving until almost 9 AM. After a rushed breakfast, we set off on our motorbikes at 10 AM to visit Phu Quoc Prison. The experience was sobering, highlighting the sacrifices made by Vietnamese soldiers. As we finished our tour, heavy rain started pouring down. We took shelter in a nearby cafe, feeling a bit deflated.

After about 15-20 minutes, the rain stopped, and we continued to Ho Quoc Pagoda, a serene and peaceful temple.

On our way back to town, we stopped for lunch at a roadside Com Tam restaurant. Afterwards, we visited Dinh Cau Temple, where the sea was quite rough that day. We spent about an hour there before heading to nearby Kien Xay for Bun Quay.

Phu Quoc Prison, Ho Quoc Pagoda, and Sao Beach are all located along the same road. We hadn’t realised this on Day 1, so we only went to Sao Beach ?.

After lunch, we went to Ong Lang Beach, a wide expanse of sand lined with restaurants displaying Russian signage. We enjoyed walking along the shore and capturing the beautiful sunset. This beach seemed less crowded than others. The willow trees provided a picturesque backdrop for photos.

As darkness fell, we returned to the hotel, freshened up, and ventured out again for dinner at Oc Binh Dan 30k, a budget-friendly snail restaurant in town.

We browsed the Phu Quoc Night Market for souvenirs and enjoyed more giant smoothies (25,000 VND each) and the leftover fruit from the previous day back at the hotel.

Day 4:

Sunrise over the oceanSunrise over the ocean

We slept in until 9:30 AM before heading down for breakfast. After checking out and storing our luggage, we rented motorbikes again to explore the town and find a place for lunch. Luckily, we discovered Tuoi Tham Family Restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and incredibly affordable – we wished we’d found it earlier!

After lunch, we searched for a cafe with air conditioning to escape the midday heat. We had hoped to take photos at Oc Sen Beach Bar, but the sun was too intense. It was a shame, as we’d planned to capture the sunset there, which is apparently stunning.

Around 3 PM, we returned to the hotel, settled our motorbike rental bill, and boarded the hotel shuttle for our transfer to the airport for our flight back to Hanoi.

  • We were disappointed that we couldn’t visit Rach Vem village to see the starfish, as the water wasn’t clear during this season.
  • We missed out on capturing sunset photos at Oc Sen Beach Bar (which was part of our initial plan).
  • Four days and three nights didn’t feel like enough time to fully explore Phu Quoc ❤️.
